Met Office urges caution as 'Chantal' moves away (Jamaica)

Jul 11, 2013

As tropical Wave Chantal continues its path through the Caribbean and heads towards the United States, the northern and eastern parishes of Jamaica were, up to last night, expected to continue experiencing heavy rain today.

The Meteorological Office of Jamaica yesterday advised that during the course of today, sections of the island would continue to experience unfavourable weather conditions.

Flash flooding is possible, with rainfall amounts reaching near 75-100 millimetres (3-4 inches) over northern and eastern parishes as well as over hilly terrain. Outbreaks of strong, gusty winds are also likely during thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to remain on the alert for rising waters, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Small craft operators should also continue to exercise caution until wind and sea conditions have returned to safe levels after the passage of the tropical wave.

The tropical wave is expected to move across Cuba today before moving into the northwestern Bahamas by tomorrow.
