Scotia Group appoints first female chairman

Brian Porter has retired as chairman of Scotia Group Jamaica Limited four months into his new job as president of the parent company in Canada.

Sylvia Chrominska was elected chairman on March 1. She has sat on the board of the banking group for more than three years, since August 27, 2009.

She joins Barita Investments chairman, Rita Humphries Lewin, as the only two women to head up the boards of a total of 48 Jamaican listed companies. Eight of those companies have female CEOs.

Chrominska's current position at Scotiabank in Canada is Group Head, Global Human Resources and Communications. She joined the bank in 1979 and has held her current position for about five years.

In 2007, Chrominska was inducted in the Hall of Fame of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. In 2010, she was the inaugural recipient of the Catalyst Canada Honours in the category of Human Resources/Diversity Leader.

Outside of business, her philanthropic interests include the fight to end multiple sclerosis.

Porter, who has worked with Scotiabank in Toronto since 1981, was promoted to president on November 1, 2012.

His stint as chairman of Scotia Group Jamaica lasted just over two years, from November 25, 2010 to February 28, 2013.
