Mitchell wins in Grenada by landslide

ST GEORGE'S—FORMER prime minister Dr Keith Mitchell was yesterday ununanimously returned to power by the people of Grenada. Mitchell’s New National Party ousted incumbent Tillman Thomas’ National Democratic Congress in a landslide 15-0 victory at yesterday’s polls. The eastern Caribbean island has been struggling to emerge from an economic crisis and Thomas, who was seeking a second term, had been under fire during the last couple years of his term.

Mitchell’s NNP had promised to create new jobs on an island struggling with a 30 percent unemployment rate during its campaign. The NDC, meanwhile, pledged to boost tourism, agriculture and the renewable energy sector. More than 62,000 of the island's nearly 110,000 inhabitants were registered to vote yesterday.
